How is Sunphenon processed?

Teabag and tea leavesThe popularity of green tea continues to grow with the ever increasing volume of research confirming a variety of health benefits.  At the same time, a number of companies have come under regulatory scrutiny due to the quality and/or safety of their tea extracts.  Most of this concern has been traced back to questionable extraction methods and a general lack of adherence to solvent and pesticide regulations.

Compliance and Peace of Mind

Solvent Compliance:

Do you know what solvents are used in your extracts?  Chloroform and other non compliant solvents are unfortunately widely used in the extraction of tea polyphenols as they offer high yields and inexpensive processing.  The use of such solvents, however, are illegal for food and supplement products in many countries, including the U.S., EU, Canada and China.  Such solvents also help to “clean up” non compliant and harmful pesticides that may be present in lower quality tea leaves.

Sunphenon is produced from the highest quality pesticide controlled green tea leaves (camellia sinensis) that is first extracted via a water infusion process.  Higher concentration extracts are then further decaffeinated using FDA, Canada and EU approved food grade ethyl acetate.  Absolutely no chloroform or other illegal solvents are used in the processing of any Sunphenon extracts.

Pesticide Compliance:

Did you know that the U.S. has one of the strictest regulations for pesticide use and agricultural residues in tea and tea extracts in the world?  Other countries have far more lenient regulations, including Japan, which permits 247 compounds, and the European Union, which permits over 450 compounds.

Under FDA Guidelines, less than 20 agricultural-residues are permitted for use in “Tea” ingredients (as of September 2013).  All others must be “Non-Detect” as tested via the most current sensitive analytical methods.  Sunphenon® is produced from pesticide compliant green tea. Sunphenon® is produced from pesticide controlled green tea leaf, extracted via a water infusion process and decaffeinated using only approved food grade solvents to assure compliance with stringent U.S. FDA residual pesticide regulations for tea as outlined in 40CFR180.  Furthermore, all product is analyzed for pesticides via 3rd party labs such as the National Food Laboratory (U.S.) and Eurofins (E.U.).

Regulatory Compliance:

Due to Taiyo’s strict adherence to solvent and pesticide regulations, as well as safe processing standards, Sunphenon meets regulations established for food, beverage and supplement use in most countries, including the U.S., Canada and European Union.
